    Book details

In this charming retelling of the classic novel Pride and Prejudice, Fitzwilliam Darcy visits his aunt Lady Catherine de Bourgh in Kent, where he finds Miss Elizabeth Bennet staying with the newly married Mrs. Collins. As Darcy feels the pangs of buried infatuation begin to resurface, he realizes that Miss Bennet detests him.At first, Darcy is relieved by his seeming escape, realizing that had he not discovered her true feelings, then he might have done the unthinkable and actually proposed. It is not long, however, before he is bewitched by her all over again, and he resolves to change her opinion of him and win her at all costs.Elizabeth Bennet wishes nothing more than to spend time with her friend and determine the true state of Mrs. Collins's happiness without the interference of any of the proud residents of Rosings Park. But she is soon made uncomfortable by the presence of Mr. Darcy, who appears before her at random times, seemingly by coincidence. As they become better acquainted, they learn more not only about each other, but also about themselves. Unfortunately, the path to happiness is not without its trials, and they both must change if they want their ultimate happiness to come to pass.

Jann Rowland is a Canadian. He enjoys reading and sports, and he also dabbles a little in music, taking pleasure in singing and playing the piano. Though Jann did not start writing until his mid-twenties, writing has grown from a hobby to an all-consuming passion. His interest in Jane Austen stems from his university days when he took a class in which Pride and Prejudice was required reading. However, his first love is fantasy fiction, which he hopes to pursue writing in the future. He now lives in Alberta with his wife of more than twenty years and his three children. An unusual approach to the Darcy and Elizabeth tale of love. It involves all the usual characters and their attempts to interfere in their romance. As a novel it was absolutely brilliant and I enjoyed it

In this variation, Mr Darcy realises that Elizabeth does not like him prior to making his proposal. This changes the direction of the tale and makes an interesting read. We see more of Anne, Colonel Fitzwilliam and Georgiana as well as the Benet family. I've given this four stars rather than five as, at times, it felt a little drawn out. At the end it seemed a rather desperate attempt to shoehorn the name of the book into the dialogue between the characters. Maybe it's just me, but I didn't think there was a whole lot of coincidence in this story. However, I enjoyed it a lot and there is no sex or particular impropriety which can dominate other books of this type.

There are books I will download without a second thought simply because of the author, Jann Rowland is one such author for me. At first I was a little unsure whether I was happy with Lizzy as she seems a little petulant, but the story really develops well. Darcy realises very early that Lizzy really does not like him and wants to try to change her opinion of him but bungles it especially because Lizzy is so unwilling. There is an argument on the scale of Hunsford whilst they're in London bringing about the break. Meanwhile Fitzwilliam, Georgiana and Anne decide that they have to help the couple who don't realise they belong together. Anne is there with them due to the intervention of the Earl and develops well in the story. Darcy contacts Bingley to explain matters and they all travel to Netherfield. Here is where the story takes a different turn due to Mr Bennett actually listening to Lizzy and I loved how it all develops. All the usual troublemakers are there, Lady C. is dealt with initially by the Earl, Bingley is very firm with Caroline who still can't see what's right in front of her but Wickham continues his evil ways with the inevitable results. I particularly liked the strong characters of Mr Bennett and Bingley, Mrs Bennett is treated very well and has quite a good relationship with Lizzy without altering very much. Lydia is still Lydia and you're waiting for the "other shoe to drop" but it's all handled very well and I was very glad to hear Fitzwilliam's opinion and that Darcy understood at last. Caroline and Lady C. still have parts to play - they really never learn do they. I really enjoyed and recommend it and no doubt will read again and again.
